DISABILITY AND MEDICARE
Medicare is a federal health program designed to help cover medical costs for eligible individuals. There are three main categories for Medicare eligibility: age, disability benefits, and specific health conditions.
If you receive disability benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board, you may qualify for Medicare even if you're under 65.
Individuals under 65 who have been receiving Social Security disability benefits for at least 24 months are eligible to enroll in Medicare. You will be automatically enrolled in Medicare on the 25th month of receiving those benefits. The same rule applies if you receive disability benefits from the Railroad Retirement Board.
Once you're automatically enrolled in Medicare, you'll receive your Medicare card in the mail approximately three months before your coverage begins on the 25th month.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and End-Stage Kidney Disease
Individuals with certain health conditions, such as end-stage renal disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, are eligible for Medicare without having to wait 24 months.
If you are diagnosed with end-stage renal disease, you qualify for Medicare if you require regular dialysis treatments or a kidney transplant. Coverage typically begins after your first dialysis session or after three months of receiving dialysis treatments.
For those diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Medicare enrollment starts in the first month after you begin receiving Social Security Disability benefits.
You can absolutely keep your Medicare coverage while returning to work, as long as you remain medically disabled. During the first 8.5 years of your Medicare coverage, you'll benefit from premium-free Part A. After that, you will need to begin paying the premium. If you encounter challenges with these payments, there are assistance programs available, such as the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary Program, which can help cover your Medicare premiums if you qualify.
