If your employer offers group health insurance, you can either keep your current coverage or switch to a Medicare plan that better suits your needs. Alternatively, you can remain enrolled in both, providing more comprehensive healthcare coverage.
In some cases, employers continue offering health insurance after retirement, which is worth considering. However, we still recommend enrolling in Medicare as soon as you're eligible to ensure you're covered and can take full advantage of the program.
Your group health plan may offer solid coverage, but it's important to also consider Medicare. The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) lasts for seven months, beginning three months before your 65th birthday. During this time, you can choose Medicare Part A, B, C, or D.
It's critical to enroll in Medicare Parts A, B (Original Medicare), or D as soon as you're eligible. Delaying enrollment could result in permanently higher monthly premiums. Since most beneficiaries receive Part A with no premium, signing up for this coverage could be more advantageous than not enrolling in Medicare at all.
Additionally, keep in mind that you must first enroll in Original Medicare before you can sign up for other Medicare plans.
One way to get the best of both worlds is by combining your employee health insurance with a Medicare plan. In this case, you'll need to determine which will serve as your primary insurance and which will be secondary.
The primary insurance pays your medical expenses first, with the secondary plan covering the remaining costs. If your employer’s health plan covers 20 or fewer people, Medicare will be the primary payer. For groups with more than 20 members, Medicare becomes the secondary payer.
If you need help deciding which healthcare strategy is best for you, we’re here to assist.
